Yeah, they help on the phone, but their manuals suck the big one. I have three of these things to set up and everybody wants the talleys and warnings and such to work and the manual tells you can do it, it just don't tell you HOW to do it.
I have spent days trying to figure out the simple things that if one or two lines in the manual were there, it would have saved hours of trial and error. I liked the Miranda Kaliedo better, but corporate said buy the Evertz because the other stations in the group had. A good sound engineering reason to do it. I've done two of these, though I certainly will not claim to be an expert and have probably long forgotten the hardest parts.
But I'll take a look on Monday & take a few notes & get back with you. I think I also have the card of the guy who supports these things, he was at our station two weeks ago.

Think of it this way. You have x stations in your group using the same piece of gear. Chances are someone within the company will have to do a upgrade, update, etc to it and then have the ability to share the information and with the other station engineers within the group.
Another good reason is it's easier to buy a service contract for the whole company to cover the same gear versus trying to buy them for different manufacturers. NECRAT wrote:That may be, but Evertz is far from 'crap'. In fact of all the manufacturers equipment i've used both in the hub and here in RI, I've found the Evertz stuff to be some of the most reliable out there. I am a big fan of the Evertz gear. Wasn't talking about Evertz's stuff. We used to use a fair amount of it in our building, however, a lot of it got replaced when Newsticker showed up and other upgrades happened around the station.
No the crap I can think of off-hand is stuff like the automation and the Telemetrics cameras. The stuff that we know better exists out there, but which we were forced to buy even though it makes our quality look like hell.

How's internal communications within your group? Our chief engineers have a weekly conference call, but us staff folks have little or no communications with the other stations.
You may install and Use the Font Software on a single file server for Use on a single local area network ('LAN') only when the Use of such Font Software is limited to the Workstations and printers that are part of the Licensed Unit of which the server is a part. You may electronically distribute Font Software embedded in a 'Personal or Internal Business Use' document (that is, a document other than a 'Commercial Product' as defined herein) only when the Font Software embedded in such document (i) is in a static graphic image (for example, a 'gif') or an embedded electronic document, and (ii) is distributed in a secure format that permits only the viewing and printing (and not the editing, altering, enhancing, or modifying) of such static graphic image or embedded document. For the purpose of determining the proper number of Workstations for which a license is needed, the following example is supplied for illustration purposes only: If there are 100 Workstations connected to the server, with no more than 15 Workstations ever using the Font Software concurrently, but the Font Software will be used on 25 different Workstations at various points in time, a site license must be obtained creating a Licensed Unit for 25 Workstations. The Font Software may not be installed or Used on a server that can be accessed via the Internet or other external network system (a system other than a LAN) by Workstations which are not part of a Licensed Unit. Berling bold italic. You may not use the Font Software to electronically distribute a Commercial Document without a separate license from MTI authorizing you to do so.

A few years ago, the CE in Portland set up a phpBB for the group, but he & I were the only two folks who ever used it. It was the same way in Madison. I think some of our folks may not even have known who the other stations in the group were. This is not a good situation but I do wonder if it's a common one?

I am a big fan of the Evertz gear. While I too am a fan of Evertz, other than lacking manuals at times, the one big issue I have with them and other Canadian TELEVISION broadcast manufactures is the notion that just because they don't do it in Canada, no one else does. If you are going to make a large chunk of your money from the US, one would think that a company would want to be sure they are giving their clients what they want. When I asked the Evertz tech was there an 'operations manual' for Maestro, his response was 'No. Why would you need one?'
I responded that the technical manual for the VIPA tells you WHAT Maestro can do, but it doesn't tell you HOW to do it or HOW it interfaces with the other configuration software for the VIPA. And he didn't think that was a big issue. I guess it is a 'Canadian thing, eh' because I have come across this attitude at several Canadian companies we we have bought equipment from. You call them up for tech support and they will act like, why would you want tech support for that?
I just don't understand it. W9wi wrote:Our chief engineers have a weekly conference call, but us staff folks have little or no communications with the other stations. The ESPN O&O Chiefs have a weekly call with the VP of Eng, and I've talked with a couple of the guys in LA and Chicago, but I couldn't tell you who to talk to at the other stations. I also know who to talk to in Bristol for any automation questions or Streaming issues, but nobody on the network distribution side. We had an issue with Deportes one day (network production routed to air), but the only person I knew to contact was an automation engineer. On the Disney side, I've talked with the Automation guru and the their Dir of Eng (because he's local), and I know personally the Milwaukee engineer, but couldn't tell you who to talk to for the other 30 stations out there (or even where most are), or who to talk to at the network. W4cl wrote:That is why is said Canadian TELEVISION manufacturers since I have no experience with the Canadian RADIO manufacturers. I was talking to a friend at another TV station and he said they were looking at switchers for their news studio and he said that the Canadian built Ross was taking the industry by storm these days since GVG seems to be slowing fading away basically doing an RCA. Looks like everything is now coming coming from Canadian.

(You should find a PM with a few hints about the Maestro).
