Nitro Cleanup Utility

I have used the cleanup utility, restarted. So, Nitro can successfully convert your password-protected files to Word, but can't view them properly?

Nitro PDF uses you boot sector to store its license information. My Nitro PDF with OCR was not showing the OCR as being active so I decided to uninstall and reinstall. I deactivated first then used Revo to uninstall. The uninstall hung up and the system completely locked up. A hard boot brought up Windows 7's boot fixer utility which played for a few minutes and then the system restarted. I couldn't find Nitro PDF nor would Revo show it so I tried to reinstall the software.

Windows Cleanup Utility

The reinstall went fine but the software would not run giving this error. “Multiple Restore Hard drive operations damaged the license and the product must be re-registered. #2” As I'd had problems with their license when using a cloned drive for backup and also when I restored my system from a backup I decided to give the software the flick. I complained to the support people and asked for a utility to get their stuff out of my boot sector but they just play dumb. They said use Revo (I had) and provided a clean-up utility that doesn't do the job. No software, other than a hard disk utility, should be allowed to play around in the boot sector.

Nitro's not necessarily a malware but acts like one in terms of its choice of hiding its license info. Writing to hidden sectors is not something that goes well with disk etiquette. On two of the machines I've seen the lic. Info written at (absolute) sectors 60 & 62.

One of them had at least 3 'clean' OS installs. Nitro generates a machine code to prevent x-use of their legit licenses on multiple machines. Info is based on this machine (HW) code. So 'Volume ID' (which changes every time the disk is formatted) alone does not alter your HW specs. If you have a legit license, it stays forever on your disk unless you deliberately choose to deactivate it. Deactivating does not remove the lic.

Data written at the hidden sectors. It is just marked as inactive. Info survives any full formatting all because it resides at a pre-partition area on your disk. Dunno at where it actually starts, but sector 62 is definitely the last choice to store that.5k lic. If you tamper with or delete the license written on hidden sectors, Nitro complains about it next time it is launched. The authors of Nitro must be very sure of themselves that the hiding corner they've chosen could have never been found and/or edited.

So, the deleted lic. Info gets written on another sector next time you start the app. Kinda funny way of self-healing. All the endeavor put in to keep the routines covert and encrypted readily fails in protecting the app. Dealing with crypto schemes requires more maths than programming capabilities.

Every concerned SW author develops custom protection schemes but when it comes to crypto, almost all of them resort to using ready made, what I call, “package solutions'. I think this is the underlying reason why the apps using encryption are less secure than those of the tailor protected ones regarding their immunity against RE attacks. Anyway, Nitro does a good job and deserves the money asked for. I'm a happy customer of them. Click to expand.Disk editors let you see/manipulate MBR area (the boot sector). HxD is a nice and free one.

To see the contents of the hidden sectors you should always select the 'physical' disk, not the logical one. Logical disk starts with the 1st partition (absolute sector #63) and hence there are no hidden ones from that sector onwards.

Sector 0 always starts with 33C0h (at offset 00) and ends with 55AAh (at offset 511) covering a total of 512 bytes length (size of one sector) in which the master boot record resides (not the volume boot record or bootloader, which resides in the first sector of the first partition. BIOS transfers its job to MBR sector #0 and MBR to VBR sector #63, then the OS starts to load). You should avoid touching those areas by all means. Between sector #1 & #62 there are 31,744 bytes of free space available divided into 62 sectors. Boot sector viruses and a few other legit apps (like Nitro) may use this area.

Usually there is no fun in peeking at those sectors and they seldom need any cleaning. What I discovered with Nitro was purely a chance (auto activation after initial launch on a freshly formatted and OS installed drive).

Data on those sectors are machine readable only. So, one needs process explorers/debuggers to analyze the mechanics of root access, calls, data I/O operations, etc. Before deciding if the stuff is bad or not.

Trial and error wouldn't be something advisable if you play with your 'system disk' at the lowest level. To see the contents of the hidden sectors you should always select the 'physical' disk, not the logical one. Logical disk starts with the 1st partition ( absolute sector #63) and hence there are no hidden ones from that sector onwards.

Below are the retail installers for Nitro Pro 11.0.7 patch. If you're a business customer (11 or more licenses under one serial number), please have your IT team submit a support ticket requesting the business installers. These installers will also be posted on our website sometimes this week. There is no need to uninstall your current version of Nitro Pro 11, this installer will overwrite it. Hi, Everything seems to work smoothly in my Nitro 11 - except for actually printing PDFs to the printer! Actually, the printing itself is very quick - but it takes a full TEN MINUTES for me to go from invoking a print job (as in, File Print, or CTRL-P) to actually being able to select/change my printer, print options, and the actual PRINT button appearing!

(once the actual print button is pressed, the file prints with normal speed of any other Windows application - the 10 minutes is just getting to the point where the button appears). Anyone have any idea how to correct this? Excellent Mario!! Here are the links; Document A - beginning document Document B - precise steps I go through to print to Document A Document C - The final product of printing (appending to the end of page) Document B to Document A Please let me know how I can better display to you the workflow that creates the issue. Thank you for your involvement and for coaching me up on JING! Hi Steven, First - thank you for getting involved - I appreciate that. It should have duplicated.

You recreated preciously the steps that would duplicated the problem; the print (amend) should have wiped your 'type text tool' edits from the document you printed to using Nitro 11, amend function. And - it doesn't sound like you flatted the text when you closed the pdf you were going to later print to using Nitro 11 printer. In our environment, the Nitro 11 print would have wiped clean the un-flattened text.

To further the mystery - we are experiencing this problem on 2 separate computers; Computer 1 = Windows 8.1 Pro, Nitro Pro 11.0.7.411 Computer 2 = Windows 10 Pro, Version 1607, OS Build plus Nitro 11.0.7.425 I don't want to dump on you the task of reporting the bug - i just don't know how to do that. Have you direction to offer on filing a bug report?

Thank you, Keith. Hi, I'd like to try to reproduce this and file a bug report if I can reproduce it (if you can file a bug report, that would be great as well). Can you give me more specific details on what to do? I tried briefly and wasn't able to get this to happen. I opened a PDF, made some changes to it (used the type text tool), and saved it as a different file. I then went back to the original, did more markup on it (highlight, note box, and call out), and did File- Print, Nitro 11 PDF Printer, and chose the file that I made the change to, and picked Amend. When I open that file, the changes are all packed into the end of the file- there's the original pages, and then a copy of those pages plus the changes I made.

Since the upgrade to Nitro Pro v.7.0.11.425 my Avast Internet Security blocks creation of PDF's in any folders protected by their Ransomware Shield (including most of the standard document folders). When printing via the Nitro PDF printer driver to a protected folder, Avast first blocks it then prompts whether to allow NxPdfCreator.exe. If I select 'yes' it then appears in Avast's list of allowed apps, but subsequent PDF creation attempts are likewise blocked, followed by the same Avast prompt. I managed to get it to work by completely uninstalling and reinstalling Nitro, then manually adding the required EXE file to the list of allowed apps. However, after two days of successful operations, I'm confronted by the same situation.

Uninstalling Nitro and reinstalling seems to have worked again, but to do this every day or so is going to be unworkable. It's entirely possible that Avast is the culprit in this scenario - however, the only known variable was the upgrade to Nitro v.7.0.11.425. The previous release (7.0.11.???) never had this problem, and Avast's ransomware protection module has been active on my PC for months with no other problems.

Just for fun, I installed a trial version of Foxit and can create PDF's in protected folders without any problem. It could be that Avast's engine simply has not caught up with the newest release of Nitro and so sees it as a potential threat. However, I don't understand why it still fails even after adding Nitro to the list of allowed apps. Steven thank you for your reply, but I think I wasn't clear.

When I said 'original filename' I meant the filename of each pdf before it was joined together on the 400 page PDF. For instance: PDF file with 4 drawings is called X. And it is formed by the files: 2189-0100, 2189-0400, 2189-0349 and 2189-0680. What I need, is to split the files and have them with their previous filenames, or 2189-0100, 2189-0400, 2189-0349 and 2189-0680. What happens now, is that I split the files, and it would come up with names like X(01), X(02), X(03), X(04)! Do you know if there is a way that I could split the 400 files and maintain their previous filenames? Regards.

Is it possible to create dynamic custom stamps that includes the firm name and the date but not the time? We need to stamp incoming documents with Firm name and date but time info is a distraction. From the create new stamp window, if 'Include name, date and time' is selected, the name is the login name and date and time are both placed on the stamp. In Preferences, the identity is grayed out/unchangeable. If Organization field is populated, there is no way to use the data in the stamp. After the stamp is placed on a document, using properties, the Author can be changed (each time the stamp is used) but there is still no way to include date but not include time.

I am new to Nitro from Adobe and this feature (available in Adobe) is important to us. Otherwise so far we really like the look and feel and functionality of Nitro Pro. I have just installed the latest version of Nirto. I use ID2017 CC to create PDF files for printing (books, etc). I run Win 10 with current updates. I print on a Fuji-Xerox Docu-Centre-V C3373 digital printer. All the pre-sets in ID are correct.

I ran a test on a few books and discovered that Nitro moved all the A Masters 5mm to the right on the printed page and the B masters 8mm to the right on the printed page. Sims 2 community lot s. This resulted in the margins/bleeds being totally out of alignment, with smaller margins and incorrectly positioned photos/drawings, despite the PDF file displaying correctly. If I print the same book with Acrobat or Nuance Advanced PDF there is now issue. As I wish to move away from subscription based software this is a major issue for me. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hello @eddiev, If you see Nitro Pro listed in Control Panel Programs & Features, kindly run our Clean-up tool to uninstalling your previous install by referring to this article: Check for left-over registries from Nitro Pro (Run regedit) and delete them. Make sure to save a backup before making any change. Reboot the machine again after deleting Nitro Pro traces. Then reboot your machine. After reboot your machine, try installing using our MSI Offline installers for Nitro Pro 11.0.7.425:64-bit: Good luck!
